7 Tips For Choosing The Right Newborn Photographer For You
advice from a brisbane newborn photographer
Choosing a newborn photographer isn't easy, here in Brisbane there is a plethora of talented photographers. But knowing what questions to ask can help ensure you choose the right one, who will capture the beauty of this special time in your child's life.
FIND A PHOTOGRAPHER WHOSE STYLE YOU LOVE!
Do some research online—look at portfolios of different photographers in your area and see if any of them catch your eye or give you an "aha!" moment where suddenly everything makes sense and feels right about that person's work style and approach to photography. You'll know when you've found someone who clicks with your style!
Do you prefer lifestyle or posed newborn photography? Some photographers offer both, some only offer one.
Don't book a photographer and request they change their style. This is their art and they've spent years perfecting it.
General Compatibility
Do your star signs align? (just kidding)
How is their communication? Do you feel like the personality of the photographer is someone you can vibe with? Check out their business social media to see if there are any posts/reels showing off who they are!
Are they trained in newborn safety?
This one is super important! I will never not stress the importance of safe posing education. Incorrect posing can put newborn babies at serious risk of injury or worse, so making sure you choose a photographer who is trained is a no brainer. Don't be afraid to ask for evidence of this!
I am personally trained through the Academy of Newborn Photography and hold an Advanced Certificate. In this course I have been thoroughly trained in Newborn health & safety.
Are they insured?
Make sure they are insured and have liability coverage in case something goes wrong during the photoshoot. Please don't fret - it is incredibly rare that this is ever needed - but just as an absolute worst case scenario.
Check out their reviews
You want to make sure that your photographer is professional, reliable, and trustworthy. You don't want to be taken for a ride by someone who doesn't know what they're doing or who has bad customer service. And one of the best ways to find out if a photographer is right for you is by reading their reviews. Reviews are the best way to get an unbiased opinion on whether or not a service is worth using. It's also the best way to get insight into the quality of their services and products.
If you can't find reviews for a photographer online - they are usually turned off for a reason (red flag)
Pricing
Ask about their pricing structure—do they charge a session fee + collections separately or by inclusive packages? Do they offer payment plans? Are there any hidden costs?
Hot Tip: Cheap newborn photographers generally aren't qualified, insured, or safety trained.. be prepared to spend more than you had planned but trust me when I say it is worth it.
Session Times & Availability
Check that the photographers availability aligns with your availability. A lot of newborn photographers don't schedule sessions on weekends, some do but charge an additional weekend surcharge.
Be sure to make sure you're fully aware of this is you require a weekend, just incase you book a photographer who will only shoot on a weekday.
It's also best to book in advance if you do need a weekend, I know personally my very limited weekend time slots book months in advance.
